And That Makes 14?

It seems fitting fifty years after the "I Have a Dream" speech, we strike another blow against inequality, bigotry, and discrimination in this country.  So, while it's a little unclear how it will apply or if we'll have more court orders coming, it appears that we have yet another state that has legalized gay marriage: New Mexico.

As you may imagine, considering the state has a Republican governor, this was a judicial rather than a legislative win.  State District Judge Alan Malott said that the gender-neutral terms in the state's marriage law do not expressly prohibit gay marriage.  Democratic Attorney General Gary King (see, those down-ballot races you vote for do matter) has said that he will not appeal the ruling.  So far, 5-6 (new reports are still coming in) counties have started issuing same-sex marriage licenses, and while we may need a judge to clarify how the rest of the state will react to the law, it's hard to imagine that some counties will legalize and not others, since the gender-neutral law is statewide.  So keep your fingers crossed, but pop the champagne, because the Land of Enchantment just got a lot more enchanting this morning.  And as for the other 36 states-we're on our way!
