Yes, fellow Democrats, we lost a major race tonight with Elizabeth Colbert Busch falling victim to the very conservative bent of South Carolina's first district. But that's no reason to sit in the dust for longer than one night of being bummed and saying mean things about the other side of the aisle and their newest congressional member and his impending day in court.
This is because we've got a number of elections still in 2013. It's easy to forget about elections in an off-off-year, but there are a number of mayor's and city council races coming up in November. And, of course, there's two of the most important remaining elections of the year-the upcoming Massachusetts U.S. Senate special election, which favors Rep. Ed Markey, but before you say it's a done deal remember a handsome former Cosmopolitan centerfold who proved even the bluest of states can go red if politicians get complacent. And, of course, one of the quintessential purple states, Virginia, has a nail-biter gubernatorial race and the Republican is so conservative that he makes Scott Walker look like Barbara Boxer. I'm not a huge fan of Terry McAuliffe, but the idea of a Governor Ken Cuccinelli makes me pray that Virginia gives him the same victory they did Barack Obama, Mark Warner, and Tim Kaine.
So, feel bummed tonight, reflect on what we could do differently, and make sure the next election we're celebrating rather than thinking "what if."
