2024 October Horror Marathon

There are apparently is some debate online over when Halloween season starts.  For some, the clock strikes September and it's time to put out your pumpkins, while others (like me) begin to welcome it once we feel a nip on the air in late September, and it's time to put up our Halloween village on the fireplace.  But undoubtedly, once we hit October 1st, you can't help but want to go bump-in-the-night, and we do that every year on the blog with our annual horror movie marathon.

The rules of the horror movie marathon are simple-I pick 15 horror movies I've never seen before, and profile them throughout the month.  The first three years, we focused exclusively on Classical Hollywood, both because that's where a lot of my gaps were (at the start of this project I hadn't seen movies as legendary as Dracula, The Mummy, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon), and because I was a scaredy-pants.  The past two years, we've focused more on the modern horror era, ranging from the early 1970's until the early-to-mid 2000's.  We haven't gotten into the past 15 years as a rule, mostly because I've seen those and because they've already been discussed.  Since I believe in trilogies (and so do horror movies), we're going to do one more year of that time frame this year,.

Since we've been doing this time frame for a few years now, a lot of the iconic films of the genre are now gone (we've done Scream, Child's Play, Friday the 13th, and The Thing), so we're going to be doing a blend this year.  A few of these are going to be cult classics, movies that don't carry the same weight as those pictures, but for horror film fans, it's staggering to imagine someone who hasn't seen them.  But we're also going to lean in a little bit on the Oscar Viewing Project.  Horror isn't a genre that Oscar likes-in fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a genre he honors less.  So as I complete this time frame, we're also going to seek out a few missing pieces from my OVP, with 5 films that managed an Oscar nomination in at least one category.  We'll talk a little bit about the history of horror at the Oscars through these movies, and why Oscar so rarely likes to get scared.  So grab your teddy bear, hide under a blanket, and make sure your door is locked (and there's no one hiding in the closet!)...all October long, we're about to get scary!
