The Time of the Season

Well, I guess there's always next year for Federer fans and congratulations to the admittedly less common Djokovic fans.  This time next year we'll be in the midst of a potential Golden Grand Slam, so there's always that to look forward to seeing.

For today's GTKY Sunday, I wanted to talk about seasons.  There are few things (okay, there are no things) that Minnesotans take more pride in than our authority on the weather.  Seriously-have you ever met someone from Minnesota?  We will sit through entire meals without saying a damn word, but bring up the weather and we'll make Kathy Griffin seem repressed.  The reality is that being in Minnesota, we get to experience all of the seasons throughout the year (sometimes all in the same week), and I figured since we're in my least favorite season, it would be appropriate to discuss a pleasant aspect of it (positive karma and all that jazz).

While I dislike Summer (I cannot do the hot and humid), I will admit that each season has its charms, particularly the time of day that I like most about them, and so I figured in relatively random post that I would give my best and worst times of the day for each season, a concept I suspect few people have entertained in the past and will now decide to ponder for themselves (hence the point of GTKY Sunday-share your opinions in the comments below).

Spring

Best: My favorite time of day during the spring is dusk.  It's terribly romantic right about then, and there's just a peak of summer and all of the promise of boating and hiking and beaches, but you don't have the blazing heat bearing down on you.  Plus, my favorite springtime activity is actually walks and hiking, and dusk is the best time for it-you don't have any worry about the heat but it's not quite cool enough to make you pack a spare pair of clothes.
Worst: Mornings, mostly because spring is the most unpredictable of seasons, and as a result I usually vastly under or overdress for the day, resulting in me shivering in shorts or sweltering in a sweater.

Summer

Best: Night.  This is actually what drove me to write this article, but summer is when I get the greatest urge to go out at night.  As an introvert, this urge to go out at night doesn't involve clubs.  Instead it involves late-night movies or drives through the dark, sort of wondering where all of the world is headed or a late night trip to a restaurant.  I also love summer night's in the country (give or take a million mosquitos), as you can go walk out in the fields and take in a thousand stars and everything sort of feels magical.
Worst: Midday.  I am literally allergic to humidity and hot weather (I will break out in hives and get massive headaches-it's truly unattractive).  So the hotter, the worse off I am, and this is why I don't live in, say, Los Angeles or Biloxi.

Autumn

Best: Morning.  Okay, I am truly a city person, but I am also someone who can appreciate nostalgia for what it is and what it isn't, and I think the fall is when I actually miss living in the country the most-I love the way that the trees change color and walking on trails in the woods and the briskness of the days.  This is particularly true in the morning, when you can pull on a light jacket and head out and enjoy the weather.
Worst: After it rains.  Raining in the autumn is terrible, which is a sentence I never say (I lurve the rain), but after it rains in the autumn the mud doesn't really disappear and it makes all of the leaves sticky and gross and frequently in Minnesota that rain turns into snow pretty quickly, and while I like the snow, snow mixed with leaves is a bad recipe.

Winter

Best: Evening.  Seriously, you can go out and do a quick walk in the cold, with all of the snow sort of twinkling and you get all cozied up and get a nice healthy breath of vitality from the chilly air and then you come in and make soup and cozy up and watch a movie.  Also, this is the most socially acceptable time to bundle under a blanket and keep warm while watching a movie with a tub of popcorn...something I do year-round, but this is that rare time I actually have company.
Worst: Right after Christmas.  Honestly, I don't mind it that much and I actually am a huge proponent of cold and snow, but people's attitudes right around this time go from being friendly with the season to being mortal enemies, and considering in Minnesota we have three more months of winter, it's important to pace yourself, which no one does and by March we all kind of hate talking to each other.

And there you have it-a seasonal rundown of my favorite times of the year.  What are yours?  Share in the comments!
